Delhi High Court
Full Form of DHC
What is DHC?
The Delhi High Court (DHC) is the highest judicial body in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, exercising original and appellate jurisdiction over civil, criminal, and constitutional matters within its territorial limits. Established on 31 October 1966 under the Delhi High Court Act, 1966, it succeeded the Lahore High Court's bench at Delhi and the Judicial Commissioner's Court. The DHC plays a pivotal role in India's judiciary by adjudicating cases that often involve central government agencies, constitutional questions, and high-stakes commercial disputes. It is one of the few high courts in India with a large bench strength and handles a significant volume of litigation, including public interest litigations (PILs) and writ petitions under Article 226 of the Constitution. The court's decisions frequently set precedents for other high courts and influence national legal discourse. For students preparing for judicial services, civil services, or LL.B. examinations, understanding the DHC's structure, landmark judgments, and procedural nuances is essential. The court is headquartered at the historic Sher Shah Road complex in New Delhi and comprises a Chief Justice and several puisne judges. Its judgments are widely reported in legal journals and digital databases, making it a key reference for legal practitioners across India.
