Directorate of Border Intelligence
Full Form of DBI
What is DBI?
The Directorate of Border Intelligence (DBI) is a specialised intelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs of India. It is primarily responsible for gathering and analysing intelligence related to India's international borders, focusing on cross-border infiltration, smuggling, and other security threats. Unlike the Intelligence Bureau (IB) or the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), which have broader national and external mandates, the DBI operates with a specific focus on the land borders, including the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and the border with Bangladesh. It works closely with border guarding forces such as the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Assam Rifles to provide actionable intelligence for proactive measures. The DBI is particularly active in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and the northeastern states, where border security is critical. In Indian competitive exams such as UPSC Civil Services and CAPF exams, knowledge of the DBI is relevant under the topics of internal security and border management. The agency plays a quiet but vital role in safeguarding the nation's territorial integrity, often coordinating with state police and other intelligence units to prevent threats before they materialise.
