Coastal Defence Zone
Full Form of CDZ
What is CDZ?
A Coastal Defence Zone (CDZ) is a designated maritime area along the Indian coastline established to enhance national security and protect territorial waters from external threats. Managed jointly by the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, CDZs are part of India's layered coastal defence strategy. These zones are defined based on geographical sensitivity, proximity to strategic assets, and historical piracy or infiltration patterns. The creation of CDZs allows for coordinated patrolling, surveillance using radar and coastal radar chains, and rapid response to any maritime incident. They are operational along the entire Indian coastline, including the Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands. In times of heightened tension, CDZs are reinforced with additional naval assets. India’s CDZ framework aligns with the National Maritime Security Grid and supports the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) doctrine. For students preparing for defence services examinations like NDA or CDS, understanding CDZs is important for questions related to India's coastal security architecture. The term is also used in policy documents by the Ministry of Defence.
