Adult Education Development Unit
Full Form of AEDU
What is AEDU?
The Adult Education Development Unit (AEDU) is a dedicated administrative body established within the framework of India's adult literacy and continuing education programs. It functions under the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, and operates primarily at the state and district levels to coordinate non-formal education initiatives aimed at eradicating illiteracy among adults. AEDU plays a vital role in designing curriculum for adult learners, training volunteer instructors known as Preraks, and monitoring literacy campaigns such as the earlier National Literacy Mission and the current New India Literacy Programme. In India, AEDUs are particularly active in rural and semi-urban belts where literacy rates remain below the national average, working in close coordination with district education officers and local self-government bodies. The unit is also responsible for conducting baseline surveys, evaluating learning outcomes, and preparing progress reports submitted to the central government. For competitive examinations such as UGC NET, CTET, and various state teaching eligibility tests, understanding the structure and functions of AEDU is important for candidates preparing on Indian education policy, adult learning frameworks, and schemes for inclusive education under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan.
