National Institute of Open Schooling
Full Form of NIOS
What is NIOS?
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, established to provide flexible, open, and distance learning opportunities up to pre-degree level. It was originally set up in 1979 as the Open School, and later granted national status in 1989. NIOS operates as a parallel school system, allowing students who cannot attend regular schools—due to financial constraints, geographical barriers, or special needs—to complete their secondary (Class 10) and senior secondary (Class 12) education. The institute follows a learner-centric approach with self-instructional materials, online tutorials, and practical training through accredited study centres across India. NIOS also offers vocational courses and supports lifelong learning through its On-Demand Examinations, which let students appear for exams when ready. For Indian competitive exams like JEE, NEET, and UPSC, NIOS certificates are widely accepted, making it a legitimate alternative to CBSE or state boards. The board is particularly popular among younger students, dropouts, and women who were unable to complete formal schooling. NIOS plays a crucial role in achieving the goal of universal education under the National Education Policy 2020.
