Central Board of Secondary Education
Full Form of CBSE
What is CBSE?
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is a national-level board of education in India that oversees school education for public and private institutions. Established in 1962, CBSE functions under the Union Ministry of Education and has its headquarters in New Delhi. Its primary role is to design the curriculum, prescribe textbooks, and conduct final examinations for Class 10 and Class 12. The board is responsible for the widespread implementation of the National Curriculum Framework and often partners with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for syllabus development. CBSE is known for its standardized, application-oriented approach that prepares students for competitive entrance examinations like JEE (Main) and NEET. The board first conducted the All India Senior School Certificate Examination in 1962, and its Class 10 examinations began later. Today, CBSE affiliates over 27,000 schools across India and in several foreign countries, making it one of the largest educational boards in the world. The board also issues affiliation to schools, monitors their academic quality, and provides guidelines for student assessment. For students appearing in government job exams or national-level competitive tests, a CBSE education is often seen as advantageous because it aligns closely with the syllabi of these examinations. Results for the board exams are announced in the summer, and they carry significant weight for higher education admissions, including direct entry into universities that use CBSE Class 12 marks for cut-off lists.
