What is CSL?
Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) is a premier shipbuilding and ship repair company based in Kochi, Kerala, India. It is a Government of India enterprise under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Established in 1972, CSL is one of the largest shipbuilding and repair facilities in the country. It builds a wide range of vessels, including bulk carriers, tankers, passenger ships, and specialized defence vessels like aircraft carriers and naval patrol ships. CSL played a key role in constructing India's first indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2022. The shipyard is also a hub for offshore structures and repairs, serving both domestic and international clients. In addition to shipbuilding, CSL operates a modern repair yard that handles vessels of various sizes. Its facilities include two large dry docks, a slipway, and state-of-the-art equipment. CSL is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange, making it a publicly traded PSU. The company contributes significantly to India's maritime economy and self-reliance in defence production. For competitive exams in India, CSL is often cited as an example of a successful public sector undertaking and a key player in the 'Make in India' initiative in the defence sector.
