Volt-Ohm Meter
Full Form of VOM
What is VOM?
A Volt-Ohm Meter, commonly abbreviated as VOM, is a multifunctional electronic measuring instrument used to check voltage, current, and resistance in electrical circuits. It combines a voltmeter, ohmmeter, and milliammeter into a single portable device, making it an essential tool for electricians, electronics technicians, and engineers. In India, VOMs are widely used in ITI workshops, polytechnic laboratories, engineering colleges, and field service work across the electrical and electronics sectors. The traditional analog version uses a moving pointer on a calibrated scale, though digital versions have largely replaced them in modern applications. The VOM is frequently mentioned in syllabi for trades such as Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, and Wireman under the Directorate General of Training (DGT). Students preparing for competitive exams like SSC, RRB, and state-level technical recruitment tests often encounter questions on VOM functions and usage. It remains a foundational instrument taught in every basic electrical training program across the country, helping learners understand circuit behaviour before they advance to specialised diagnostic tools.
