Defence Science Organisation
Full Form of DSO
What is DSO?
The Defence Science Organisation (DSO) was a pioneering scientific body established in 1948 by the Government of India to coordinate and advance defence research and development. It was the precursor to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which was formally created in 1958. DSO played a critical role in building India's indigenous defence capability in the early post-independence years, focusing on areas such as armaments, electronics, and aeronautics. It operated under the Ministry of Defence and laid the foundation for India's strategic autonomous defence production. Today, DSO is primarily of historical importance and is frequently referenced in Indian defence studies, competitive examinations like UPSC, and military history discussions. Its legacy is seen in modern DRDO labs such as the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) and the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL). For students, the transition from DSO to DRDO is a key highlight in the evolution of India's defence research infrastructure.
