What is VML?
Vector Markup Language, commonly known by its abbreviation VML, is an XML-based file format used to describe two-dimensional vector graphics. Developed in the late 1990s by Microsoft, Macromedia, and others, it was submitted to the World Wide Web Consortium and became a recommended standard in 1999. VML was widely used in web browsers such as Internet Explorer 5 and above to render shapes, charts, diagrams, and other scalable graphics directly within HTML pages. Its role was significant during the early days of web design when lightweight, resolution-independent images were needed without relying on heavy bitmap files. In India, VML finds relevance among web developers, UI designers, and IT students who study legacy web technologies as part of their computer science curriculum. Although largely replaced today by SVG, knowledge of VML still appears in competitive exams and technical interviews dealing with web development history, browser compatibility, and document interchange formats used in older Microsoft Office files like Word and PowerPoint.
