Village Health Worker
Full Form of VHW
What is VHW?
The Village Health Worker, commonly abbreviated as VHW, is a trained community-level health functionary who delivers essential primary healthcare services to residents of rural and remote villages across India. VHWs play a vital role in bridging the gap between formal medical institutions and grassroots communities, particularly in areas where access to doctors, hospitals, and diagnostic facilities remains limited. Their responsibilities typically include basic health education, maternal and child care support, immunisation drives, family planning counselling, first aid, and monitoring of communicable diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and dengue. They also assist in maintaining sanitation awareness and promoting nutrition programmes. The concept has been strengthened under the National Health Mission, where VHWs often work alongside ASHA workers, ANMs, and Anganwadi workers. In India, VHWs are usually selected from the village itself to ensure cultural familiarity and trust. They are frequently featured in questions related to public health, rural development, and healthcare policy in competitive examinations such as UPSC, state PSCs, and nursing entrance tests, making the term important for aspirants.
