Anganwadi Worker
Full Form of AWW
What is AWW?
An Anganwadi Worker (AWW) is a frontline community health and nutrition worker employed under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme, a flagship program of the Government of India. Operating from local Anganwadi centers, these workers provide essential services such as supplementary nutrition, preschool education, immunization support, health check-ups, and nutrition counseling to children under six years, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and adolescent girls. The AWW system is a cornerstone of India's efforts to combat malnutrition and improve early childhood care, especially in rural and tribal areas. Anganwadi Workers are trained to identify malnourished children, refer cases to primary health centers, and mobilize families for government health campaigns. They also maintain detailed records of beneficiaries and coordinate with auxiliary nurse midwives (ANMs) and health supervisors. The role of an AWW is often highlighted in competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state PCS, as it exemplifies grassroots governance and social welfare. Despite challenges like low honorarium and heavy workloads, these workers remain vital for achieving India's nutritional and health targets.
