Village Health Volunteer
Full Form of VHV
What is VHV?
VHV stands for Village Health Volunteer, a community health worker appointed in rural Indian villages to support primary healthcare delivery at the grassroots level. Selected from the local community itself, these volunteers receive basic training in maternal and child health, immunization, sanitation, nutrition, family planning, and prevention of common communicable diseases. They act as a vital link between rural households and the formal public healthcare system, carrying out tasks such as registering pregnant women, conducting home visits, distributing oral rehydration solution, monitoring growth of infants, and promptly reporting disease outbreaks. The concept has been widely implemented through state-level public health programs, particularly in Tamil Nadu, and complements the work of ASHA workers under India's National Health Mission. VHVs are especially valuable in tribal, hilly, and remote regions where access to doctors and Primary Health Centres remains limited. For aspirants preparing for nursing, ANM, or public health entrance and competitive exams in India, questions about the role, training, and functions of Village Health Volunteers are regularly featured in the syllabus.
