Voluntary Emission Reduction
Full Form of VER
What is VER?
Voluntary Emission Reduction, commonly abbreviated as VER, is a type of carbon credit or carbon offset generated by projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but unlike Certified Emission Reductions, these credits are traded on voluntary carbon markets and are not regulated by binding international treaties such as the Kyoto Protocol. In India, VER projects have been widely developed across renewable energy installations, biomass power plants, energy efficiency programmes, afforestation drives, and waste management initiatives in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat. Indian project developers, NGOs, and corporate entities actively participate in voluntary carbon markets, selling credits to airlines, manufacturing companies, and global firms that wish to offset their carbon footprint. These credits are registered and tracked through international voluntary registries such as Verra, Gold Standard, and the Chicago Climate Exchange. For Indian competitive examinations including UPSC, SSC, banking, and state public service commissions, knowledge of VER is useful in sections covering climate change, environmental economics, carbon trading, and India's commitments under the Paris Agreement.
