Greenhouse Gas
Full Form of GHG
What is GHG?
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are atmospheric gases that trap heat by absorbing infrared radiation emitted from Earth's surface, leading to the greenhouse effect and global warming. Major GHGs include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and fluorinated gases. In India, GHGs are central to climate change discussions, with the country being the world’s third-largest emitter. Emissions stem from energy production, agriculture (paddy fields, livestock), industrial processes, and waste management. India has committed to reducing GHG intensity under the Paris Agreement and launched initiatives like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) and state-level climate action plans. GHGs are measured in carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) for reporting to the UNFCCC. The term is widely used in environmental policy, corporate sustainability reports, and academic research. For competitive exams like UPSC and UGC NET, understanding GHG sources, sinks, and mitigation strategies is essential for environmental science and general studies papers.
