Video Display Terminal
Full Form of VDT
What is VDT?
A Video Display Terminal (VDT) is an electronic output device that displays text and images on a screen, primarily used as an interface for interacting with computer systems. In India, VDTs became widely adopted during the 1980s and 1990s with the growth of the IT sector, banking automation, and government computerisation drives. Today, VDTs are commonly found in offices, railway reservation counters, banks, and educational institutions across the country, serving as the primary workstation for data entry, customer service, and software development tasks. With the rise of mobile computing and remote work culture in India, VDTs have evolved into modern LCD and LED monitors connected to desktops and laptops in nearly every workplace. Occupational health guidelines issued by Indian labour authorities stress the importance of ergonomic practices for VDT users to prevent eye strain, neck pain, and repetitive stress injuries. For students preparing for competitive exams such as SSC, UPSC, and banking recruitment tests, understanding the term VDT is helpful in computer awareness and general knowledge sections.
