What is LCD?
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display, a flat-panel display technology that uses liquid crystals sandwiched between two layers of polarized glass or plastic. When an electric current passes through the liquid crystals, they align to block or allow light, creating images on the screen. In India, LCDs are ubiquitous in everyday devices, including television sets, computer monitors, laptops, smartphones, digital watches, calculators, and automotive dashboards. They have largely replaced older cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays due to their slim profile, energy efficiency, and lower heat generation. Indian electronics markets, from local repair shops to major retail chains like Croma and Vijay Sales, stock a wide range of LCD screens across price points. The technology is also extensively used in public information displays at railway stations, airports, and educational institutions. For students preparing for competitive exams like JEE, GATE, or SSC JE, understanding the working principle of LCDs is important in the electronics and physics sections. LCDs are often compared with LED and OLED displays, as each has distinct advantages in brightness, color accuracy, and power consumption.
