What is UVF?
The Ulster Volunteer Force, commonly referred to by the acronym UVF, is a Northern Irish paramilitary organisation with origins dating back to 1912, when it was initially formed to resist the passage of the Third Home Rule Bill for Ireland. The modern UVF was re-established in 1966 amid rising sectarian tensions during the period known as the Troubles, an ethno-nationalist conflict that lasted from the late 1960s until 1998. Primarily composed of Protestant unionist and loyalist members, the group engaged in armed actions against Irish republican forces and was subsequently designated as a proscribed terrorist organisation by the United Kingdom.
