Irish National Liberation Army
Full Form of INLA
What is INLA?
The Irish National Liberation Army, commonly known as INLA, is a republican paramilitary organisation that was officially formed in December 1974 in Northern Ireland. It emerged as a splinter group from the Official IRA and was driven by a socialist and Marxist ideology aimed at ending British sovereignty over Northern Ireland and ultimately unifying the island of Ireland into a single socialist republic. The group carried out numerous attacks against British security forces, loyalist paramilitaries, and occasionally civilians during the period known as The Troubles. Although smaller than the Provisional IRA, the INLA was notable for its ruthlessness and was responsible for several high-profile assassinations, including the killing of British politician Airey Neave in 1979. The organisation declared a ceasefire in 1998 following the Good Friday Agreement and formally decommissioned its weapons in 2010. For Indian students preparing for UPSC, SSC, and other competitive examinations, INLA frequently appears in questions related to international organisations, global conflicts, and Northern Ireland history, making it an important term in world affairs preparation.
