Urban Development Authority
Full Form of UDA
What is UDA?
Urban Development Authority (UDA) is a statutory body established by state governments in India to plan, regulate, and oversee the development of urban areas. UDAs operate at the city or regional level and are responsible for preparing master plans, approving building layouts, issuing development permissions, and ensuring that construction activities comply with zoning regulations. Several Indian states have set up their own UDAs, such as the Lucknow Development Authority, Jaipur Development Authority, and Udaipur Development Authority, each functioning under state-specific acts passed by the respective state legislatures. These authorities play a central role in managing rapid urban growth, providing affordable housing solutions, and maintaining infrastructure standards in expanding cities. UDAs also acquire land for public projects, develop residential and commercial sectors, and coordinate with municipal bodies for efficient service delivery. In recent years, UDAs have also been tasked with implementing Smart City projects, sustainable development goals, and environmental clearances for large-scale constructions. The concept is frequently covered in competitive examinations such as UPSC Civil Services, state Public Service Commission tests, and postgraduate entrance exams in urban planning, as questions often focus on the structure, functions, and challenges of urban governance bodies in India.
