Unmanned Underwater Vehicle
Full Form of UUV
What is UUV?
Unmanned Underwater Vehicle, commonly known as UUV, is a self-propelled or remotely controlled submersible craft that operates beneath the ocean surface without any human crew on board. These vehicles are designed to perform a wide range of missions including oceanographic research, seabed mapping, mine detection, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, and surveillance in hostile waters. In India, the Indian Navy has been actively pursuing UUV technology as a critical element of its naval modernisation programme under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative. The Defence Research and Development Organisation, working alongside private defence firms and academic institutions such as IIT Madras, has been developing indigenous UUVs suited for both civilian research and military applications. UUVs prove especially valuable for tasks that are too dangerous, repetitive, or prolonged for crewed submarines, such as monitoring undersea cables and pipelines across the vast Indian Ocean Region. The technology also supports offshore oil exploration, marine biodiversity studies, and port security operations along India's 7,500-kilometre coastline. For competitive exams such as UPSC CDS, NDA, and engineering services, UUV is a relevant term under defence technology and naval modernisation chapters.
