Unmanned Surface Vehicle
Full Form of USV
What is USV?
An Unmanned Surface Vehicle, commonly abbreviated as USV, is a watercraft that operates on the surface of water without a human crew on board. It can be remotely controlled by an operator on a ship or shore, or function autonomously using pre-programmed routes and onboard sensors. In India, the Indian Navy and DRDO have been actively developing and inducting USVs for coastal surveillance, mine countermeasure missions, intelligence gathering, and anti-piracy patrols along sensitive maritime zones. The Indian Navy deployed its first USV, developed indigenously by a private firm, to enhance situational awareness in the Indian Ocean Region. These vessels are equipped with radar, electro-optical cameras, and sonar systems, and they play a critical role in reducing risk to naval personnel during dangerous operations. USVs are also expected to support hydrographic surveys, search and rescue missions, and electronic warfare. For aspirants preparing for defence, naval, or UPSC examinations, understanding USV technology is increasingly important as India expands its autonomous maritime capabilities under the Make in India initiative.
