Union Territory
Full Form of UT
What is UT?
A Union Territory, commonly abbreviated as UT, is a type of administrative division in India that is directly administered and governed by the Central Government through an appointed administrator, rather than by an elected state government. Unlike Indian states, which have their own elected legislative assemblies and chief ministers, most Union Territories do not have a separate state legislature, though some like Delhi and Puducherry have elected assemblies with limited powers. The concept was introduced through the Constitution of India, where the President of India appoints a Lieutenant Governor or Administrator to oversee each UT. Currently, India has eight Union Territories, including Delhi, Puducherry, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These territories play a vital role in India's defence, international trade, and cultural preservation, and many are located in strategically sensitive border regions. Understanding the administrative structure, governance, and key differences between UTs and states remains a critical topic for aspirants preparing for competitive examinations such as UPSC Civil Services, SSC, banking, and state public service commissions.
