Unidentified Reading Frame
Full Form of URF
What is URF?
Unidentified Reading Frame, commonly abbreviated as URF, is an important concept in molecular biology and genetics that refers to a segment of DNA or RNA whose protein product or function has not yet been determined or characterized. In genetic translation, a reading frame is one of three possible ways nucleotide sequences are read by ribosomes to produce proteins, and when an open reading frame lacks a confirmed functional protein output, it is labelled as a URF. In India, this concept forms a vital part of undergraduate and postgraduate curricula in biotechnology, genetics, microbiology, and bioinformatics taught at central universities, IISERs, and IITs. Researchers and students engaged in genome annotation projects, including those contributing to national sequencing efforts, regularly work with URF analysis. For competitive examinations such as CSIR NET Life Sciences, DBT JRF, GATE Biotechnology, and NEET, understanding reading frames including URFs is a frequently tested topic, making this acronym particularly relevant for science aspirants preparing for higher studies and research careers in India.
