What is RNA?
Ribonucleic Acid, commonly known as RNA, is a polymeric molecule essential for various biological roles, including coding, decoding, regulation, and expression of genes. In India, RNA is a fundamental topic in school and university biology syllabi, from Class 12 until postgraduate research. It acts as a messenger carrying instructions from DNA for protein synthesis and also plays catalytic and regulatory roles. The molecule is single-stranded and composed of nucleotides containing ribose sugar, phosphate groups, and nitrogenous bases—adenine, uracil, cytosine, and guanine. Indian laboratories and biotech firms harness RNA technology for vaccine development, disease diagnosis, and crop improvement, making it a cornerstone of the country's growing biotechnology sector.
