What is RRNA?
Ribosomal Ribonucleic Acid (rRNA) is a type of non-coding RNA that forms the core structural and functional component of ribosomes—the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis. In all living cells, including those in plants, animals, and microorganisms, rRNA constitutes about 80% of the total RNA mass. It is transcribed from ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and, together with ribosomal proteins, assembles into two ribosomal subunits (large and small). The rRNA molecule provides the catalytic site for peptide bond formation during translation, a process that decodes messenger RNA (mRNA) into polypeptide chains. In India, rRNA is a fundamental topic in high school biology curricula, especially under the CBSE, ICSE, and various state boards, and is extensively covered in competitive examinations such as NEET, AIIMS, and JEE for biotechnology aspirants. Understanding rRNA's role in ribosome structure and function is crucial for grasping core concepts of cell biology and central dogma of molecular biology.
