Unnat Pashudhan Yojana
Full Form of UPY
What is UPY?
Unnat Pashudhan Yojana, commonly abbreviated as UPY, is a flagship welfare initiative of the Government of India designed to promote scientific livestock management, genetic upgradation of indigenous breeds, and enhanced income for small and marginal farmers engaged in animal husbandry. Operated under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, the scheme provides subsidies on high-yielding milch animals, supports fodder cultivation, and expands access to veterinary healthcare at the grassroots level. UPY is widely implemented across states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, where livestock forms a backbone of the rural economy. Beneficiaries typically include landless labourers, women self-help groups, and traditional pastoral communities who receive crossbred cows, buffaloes, goats, and pigs along with structured training in animal care. The programme also integrates with the National Livestock Mission, ensuring convergence with broader rural development goals. For aspirants preparing for competitive exams such as UPSC, state PSCs, IBPS, and SSC, understanding the structure, eligibility criteria, and funding pattern of UPY is important as questions on central and state-sponsored animal husbandry schemes frequently appear in the general awareness and agriculture sections of these examinations.
