What is AHD?
Acute Hemodialysis (AHD) is a life-saving medical procedure used to filter waste products and excess fluids from the blood when the kidneys suddenly stop functioning. Unlike chronic dialysis, which is scheduled regularly for end-stage renal disease, AHD is administered in emergency or hospital settings for patients experiencing acute kidney injury (AKI) due to infections, dehydration, drug toxicity, or trauma. In India, AHD is increasingly available in tertiary care centres and district hospitals, though access remains limited in rural areas. It plays a critical role in managing complications like hyperkalemia, metabolic acidosis, and fluid overload. The procedure involves using a dialysis machine with a temporary vascular access, typically a central venous catheter. AHD sessions may be daily or alternate days depending on the patient's condition, and they continue until kidney function recovers. For medical students and nursing professionals, understanding AHD protocols and indications is essential for NEET PG and other clinical exams. The rising burden of AKI in India, linked to tropical infections and unregulated medication use, makes AHD a key area of focus in nephrology and critical care.
