Chronic Kidney Disease
Full Form of CKD
What is CKD?
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive loss of kidney function over a period of months or years. In India, CKD has emerged as a major public health concern, driven by the rising prevalence of diabetes and hypertension. The condition is characterized by a gradual decline in the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), leading to the accumulation of waste products in the blood. It is commonly diagnosed through blood and urine tests that measure creatinine levels and proteinuria. CKD is staged from 1 to 5, with stage 5 indicating end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. In the Indian healthcare system, CKD management involves lifestyle modifications, medication to control blood pressure and blood sugar, and regular monitoring. The disease disproportionately affects rural populations due to limited access to screening and early intervention. Patients often present late, when kidney damage is already advanced. CKD is a significant topic in medical entrance exams (NEET, AIIMS) and public health courses, where students learn about its epidemiology, risk factors, and treatment protocols. Understanding CKD is also vital for nursing and pharmacy professionals who manage complications like anemia and mineral bone disorders.
