Universal Postal Union
Full Form of UPU
What is UPU?
The Universal Postal Union, commonly known as UPU, is a United Nations specialized agency that coordinates postal policies among its 192 member countries, including India. Established in 1874 through the Treaty of Bern, it became a UN specialized agency in 1948 and remains headquartered in Bern, Switzerland. UPU plays a vital role in standardising international mail services, setting quality benchmarks for delivery timelines, and ensuring affordable cross-border postal communication for citizens worldwide. In India, the Department of Posts under the Ministry of Communications represents the country at UPU and follows its frameworks for international letter post, parcel post, money orders, and EMS speed post services. The organisation also assists developing nations in modernising their postal infrastructure, training postal workers, and adopting digital transformation in mail handling. India, operating one of the largest postal networks globally with over 1,55,000 post offices, benefits significantly from UPU's technical cooperation, financial assistance, and global best practices. The UPU Congress, held every four years, brings together postal administrators to discuss reforms. For students preparing for UPSC, SSC, and banking exams, UPU frequently appears in general awareness sections under international organisations and postal services.
