International Telecommunication Union
Full Form of ITU
What is ITU?
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for issues related to information and communication technologies (ICTs). Founded in 1865, it is the oldest international organization in the ICT sector. The ITU coordinates global telecom standards, allocates radio spectrum and satellite orbits, and works to improve digital access in developing countries. In India, the ITU plays a crucial role in setting technical standards for telecom networks, managing spectrum for services like 5G, and supporting digital inclusion initiatives. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) actively participate in ITU meetings and adopt its recommendations. The ITU is relevant for UPSC, GATE, and telecom exams as it features in questions on international organizations, global governance, and ICT policies. Its three sectors—ITU-R (radio), ITU-T (standards), and ITU-D (development)—cover everything from mobile networks to cybersecurity.
