What is UNW?

UN Women, formally known as the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, is the principal UN organization driving global efforts toward gender equality and women's empowerment. Headquartered in New York and established in 2010, it was created by the UN General Assembly to unify four earlier UN bodies that had previously worked on women's issues. In India, UN Women works in partnership with the central government, state governments, panchayats, civil society organizations, and grassroots women's collectives to address gender-based violence, promote women's economic participation, strengthen political leadership, and improve access to education, health, and justice. Its flagship initiatives in India include the Second Chance Education and Vocational Learning Programme, technical assistance to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and public campaigns such as Orange the World and HeForShe that engage men and boys as allies in the cause of gender justice. UN Women India also supports research, policy advocacy, and gender data collection. For students preparing for UPSC civil services, SSC, banking, or state PSC examinations, familiarity with UN Women's mandate, India's CEDAW commitments, and its alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 5 is frequently tested in General Studies and Essay papers.
