What is UNO?
The United Nations Organization (UNO), commonly referred to as the United Nations, is an international body established on October 24, 1945, in the aftermath of the Second World War to maintain global peace, security, and foster cooperation among sovereign nations. It currently comprises 193 member states, with India being one of the founding members. The headquarters of UNO is situated in New York City, United States, and it functions through six principal organs, including the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and the International Court of Justice. In the Indian context, the United Nations Organization plays a significant role in supporting development goals, humanitarian assistance, climate action, and peacekeeping operations. India has contributed substantially to UN peacekeeping missions across the world and engages actively in various UN-led initiatives on sustainability and counter-terrorism. Several specialised agencies such as UNICEF, WHO, and UNDP operate within India to support health, education, and rural development programmes. For students preparing for competitive examinations like UPSC, SSC, banking, and defence services, understanding the structure, agencies, and India's engagement with UNO remains a highly important topic in the general awareness and international affairs sections.
