Uterine Fibroid Embolization
Full Form of UFE
What is UFE?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization, commonly abbreviated as UFE, is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat symptomatic uterine fibroids in women. The technique is performed by an interventional radiologist who inserts a thin catheter through the groin or wrist and guides it to the uterine arteries supplying blood to the fibroids. Tiny particles are then released to block the blood flow, causing the fibroids to shrink gradually over weeks and months. In India, UFE has gained significant traction over the past decade as a uterus-sparing alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy, particularly in metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad where advanced interventional radiology units are available. The procedure usually requires only a short hospital stay of one to two days and offers faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery. UFE is most commonly recommended for women with heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or pressure symptoms caused by multiple or large fibroids. The topic is relevant for medical students preparing for NEET PG, FMGE, and AIIMS entrance examinations, as well as for obstetrics and gynaecology residents learning modern fibroid management protocols.
