In Vitro Fertilization
Full Form of IVF
What is IVF?
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology where an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body in a laboratory, and the resulting embryo is transferred into the uterus. It is a well-established treatment for infertility, used by millions worldwide. In India, IVF has become increasingly popular due to rising infertility rates, delayed childbearing, and improved access to fertility clinics. The procedure involves several steps: ovarian stimulation with hormones, egg retrieval via a minor surgical procedure, fertilization in a petri dish, embryo culture for a few days, and finally embryo transfer. IVF is recommended for various conditions such as blocked fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, endometriosis, ovulation disorders, and unexplained infertility. The Indian government has introduced the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 to regulate IVF clinics and safeguard the rights of patients and donors. For medical entrance exams like NEET PG and AIIMS, questions on IVF indications, complications, and success rates are common. Ethical considerations around embryo wastage and surrogacy are also discussed. Despite debates, IVF remains a beacon of hope for many couples seeking parenthood in India.
