Antiretroviral Therapy
Full Form of ART
What is ART?
Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is a medical treatment that uses a combination of drugs to suppress the replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and slow the progression of HIV disease. It is not a cure but allows people living with HIV to lead longer, healthier lives and significantly reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others. In India, ART is a cornerstone of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) run by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). The therapy is provided free of cost through government-designated ART centres across all states and union territories. These centres manage the initiation, monitoring, and adherence support for patients. ART is used in clinical settings for both adults and children, and its widespread availability has transformed HIV from a fatal disease into a manageable chronic condition. In terms of exam relevance, questions on ART often appear in medical entrance exams like NEET PG, as well as in public health and social science sections of UPSC and state civil services exams, particularly with reference to India's achievements in controlling the HIV epidemic. The therapy is also mentioned in the context of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (good health and well-being) and India's commitment to the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets.
