Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
Full Form of AIDS
What is AIDS?
AIDS, or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, is a life-threatening condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). In India, AIDS is a major public health concern, with the government implementing extensive programs through the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) to prevent and manage the disease. The condition is diagnosed when the immune system becomes too weak to fight off infections and certain cancers. AIDS is primarily transmitted via unprotected sexual contact, contaminated blood transfusions, sharing of infected needles, and from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. In the Indian context, awareness campaigns, free testing, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) have significantly reduced transmission rates and improved the quality of life for those living with HIV. The term AIDS is widely used in medical diagnostics, public health policy, and social awareness initiatives. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC or state PCS, understanding the basics of AIDS, its transmission, prevention, and India's efforts under programs like the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) is important, as questions on health and government schemes are common.
