Urban Basic Health
Full Form of UBH
What is UBH?
Urban Basic Health (UBH) refers to a framework of primary healthcare services designed specifically for populations living in urban and semi-urban areas of India. The concept emerged as part of broader public health reforms aimed at bridging the gap between rural and urban healthcare delivery, particularly for residents of slums and informal settlements who often lack access to quality medical facilities. Under the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), UBH centres function as the first point of contact for urban poor families, offering essential services such as immunisation, maternal and child health care, treatment of common illnesses, family planning counselling, and basic diagnostic support. These centres are typically manned by auxiliary nurse midwives, doctors, and public health staff who coordinate with local municipal bodies. UBH plays a crucial role in disease surveillance, health awareness drives, and referral services to higher tertiary hospitals. The term frequently appears in UPSC, AIIMS, and state public service commission examinations, especially under topics covering health policy, urban governance, and the National Health Mission.
