What is UAY?
The Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana, commonly known as UAY, is a flagship research and innovation scheme of the Government of India, launched in 2015 by the then Ministry of Human Resource Development. Its primary purpose is to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application by encouraging collaboration between premier higher education institutions such as the IITs, NITs, IISc Bangalore, and other recognised universities, and the industry. Under this scheme, industry partners co-invest in selected research projects alongside the government, with industry funding at least 25 percent of the project cost, making it a true public-private partnership model. The scheme focuses on translational research, addressing real-world challenges in areas like manufacturing, healthcare, energy, defence technology, and rural development. Projects funded under UAY are expected to lead to patentable technologies, prototypes, and commercially viable products. In India, UAY is widely referenced in academic circles, university research offices, and government policy discussions, and questions related to it appear in exams such as UGC NET, GATE, and various central government competitive examinations.
