What is DST?
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is a department within the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Government of India. Established in 1971, it is the nodal agency responsible for coordinating and promoting science and technology activities in the country. DST formulates policies, implements programmes, and provides financial support for research and development across universities, national laboratories, and industries. It plays a crucial role in fostering innovation, advancing scientific infrastructure, and nurturing human resources in science. DST administers key schemes such as the Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure (FIST), the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE), and the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). It also oversees autonomous bodies like the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC). In the Indian context, DST is a cornerstone of the country's scientific ecosystem, driving initiatives like the India Innovation Index and the Global Innovation Index linkage. For competitive exams like UPSC and state civil services, knowledge of DST's programmes and recent missions is often tested in the science and technology section.
