Tension-free Vaginal Tape
Full Form of TVT
What is TVT?
Tension-free Vaginal Tape, commonly abbreviated as TVT, is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women, a condition where urine leaks during activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or physical exertion. The technique involves placing a thin synthetic mesh tape under the mid-urethra to provide support and restore normal continence without applying tension to the surrounding tissues. Introduced in 1996 by Ulmsten and Petros, the TVT procedure quickly became a gold-standard treatment worldwide, including in India, where it is performed in major hospitals, teaching institutions, and specialty urology and gynecology centres across cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Indian gynaecologists and urologists frequently use this approach as it offers short operative time, quick recovery, and high long-term success rates. The acronym is regularly featured in postgraduate medical textbooks, operative surgery manuals, and question banks for NEET-SS, NEET-PG, AIIMS, and PGI entrance examinations, making it a familiar term for medical students and surgical trainees preparing for clinical and viva sections.
