International Subscriber Dialing
Full Form of ISD
What is ISD?
International Subscriber Dialing (ISD) is a telecommunications service that allows users to directly dial telephone numbers in other countries without operator assistance. In India, ISD is commonly associated with the prefix '00' or '+' used before the country code when making international calls. The service is a cornerstone of global communication, enabling personal, business, and diplomatic exchanges across borders. In the Indian context, ISD codes are regulated by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and provided by telecom operators such as BSNL, Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea. Usage of ISD is widespread in urban and rural areas alike, often seen in calling cards, mobile plans, and landline services. For students appearing for banking, telecom, or general awareness exams, understanding ISD fundamentals is important, especially questions related to telecom infrastructure and international dialing procedures. ISD should not be confused with STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialing), which handles domestic long-distance calls. While VoIP and internet-based apps have reduced the prominence of traditional ISD, it remains essential for direct, reliable international voice calls and for accessing services that require a phone number.
