What is GSM?
GSM, or Global System for Mobile Communications, is a digital mobile network standard that was first developed in the 1980s and became the de facto global standard for second-generation (2G) cellular networks. In India, GSM technology was introduced in the 1990s and rapidly adopted by major telecom operators such as Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and BSNL, enabling widespread voice calling and basic data services. It operates on various frequency bands, including 900 MHz and 1800 MHz, and uses SIM cards to authenticate subscribers. Although India has migrated to 4G and 5G technologies, GSM remains relevant for legacy devices and rural coverage areas where 2G networks continue to serve millions. The standard defines the network architecture, including base transceiver stations, mobile switching centers, and home location registers. For competitive exams like the GATE, ESE, and telecom industry certifications, understanding GSM is fundamental to grasping cellular concepts such as TDMA, frequency reuse, and roaming. Today, GSM networks coexist with newer technologies, but its contribution to connecting urban and rural India remains significant.
