Public Call Office
Full Form of PCO
What is PCO?
Public Call Office (PCO) is a telephone booth operated by state-owned telecom companies like BSNL and MTNL, providing public access to voice calling services. Historically, PCOs were the primary means of communication for millions of Indians before the mobile phone revolution, and they remain vital in rural and remote areas with limited mobile network coverage. Typically located at bus stands, railway stations, post offices, and marketplaces, these booths offer both local and long-distance calling through an operator-assisted system. In many regions, PCO booths also provide facility for STD and ISD calls. While their usage has declined in urban centres due to widespread mobile phones, PCOs continue to serve as a reliable communication link for those without personal mobile devices, migrant workers, and travellers. The Indian government has also promoted PCOs as a source of livelihood for thousands of small entrepreneurs under the Public Call Office franchise scheme. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, questions on telecom infrastructure often include the role of PCO in bridging the digital divide and its historical significance in India's telecommunication growth.
