Training of Trainers
Full Form of TOT
What is TOT?
Training of Trainers (TOT) is a structured pedagogical approach widely adopted across India to build a pool of skilled master trainers who can, in turn, train large numbers of learners at the grassroots level. It is a cornerstone of government-led skill development initiatives such as those run by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, NSDC, DDU-GKY, and various state skill missions. TOT programmes are also used extensively in school education under NCERT and state SCERT frameworks, in healthcare worker training, agricultural extension services, and corporate employee upskilling modules. A typical TOT workshop covers adult learning principles, instructional design, communication techniques, assessment methods, and hands-on facilitation practice. The model is crucial in India where the demand for qualified trainers far outstrips supply, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities and rural districts. For competitive examinations including UGC NET, CTET, KVS, NVS, and state TETs, aspirants frequently encounter questions on TOT methodology as part of pedagogy and teaching aptitude sections.
