Technology Readiness Level
Full Form of TRL
What is TRL?
Technology Readiness Level, commonly abbreviated as TRL, is a globally accepted measurement framework used to evaluate the maturity of a particular technology throughout its development cycle. Originally developed by NASA in the 1970s, the TRL scale runs from Level 1, representing basic observed principles, to Level 9, indicating a fully proven system ready for real-world deployment. In India, the TRL framework is extensively used by organisations such as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the Department of Science and Technology, and various Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) laboratories to assess indigenous innovations before they are transferred to industry or deployed in the field. The Indian government also references TRL classifications in its Start-Up India, Make in India, and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives while funding research projects. The framework helps decision-makers identify funding gaps and reduces the risk of premature commercialisation. For Indian students and professionals, understanding TRL is highly relevant for examinations such as GATE, UGC NET in Engineering Sciences, DRDO entry-level tests, and various PSU recruitment interviews where questions on technology lifecycle and innovation management are frequently asked.
