Traditional Chinese Medicine
Full Form of TCM
What is TCM?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient holistic healing system that has been practised in China for over 2,500 years. It encompasses a wide range of therapeutic practices including acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping therapy, moxibustion, and Tai Chi. TCM is fundamentally built on the philosophy of balancing the body's vital energy, known as Qi, and harmonising the opposing forces of Yin and Yang to maintain health and prevent disease. In India, TCM has gained significant recognition as a complementary and alternative medicine system, particularly through the growing acceptance of acupuncture therapy for chronic pain management, stress relief, and rehabilitation. Several Indian hospitals, rehabilitation centres, and wellness clinics in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru now offer TCM-based treatments alongside modern allopathic medicine. The Indian government, through the Ministry of AYUSH, has acknowledged the importance of traditional medicine systems and supports research into practices like acupuncture that overlap with TCM. For students preparing for medical entrance exams, public health courses, or UPSC, understanding TCM is useful as questions on alternative medicine systems frequently appear in general knowledge sections and competitive examinations.
