What is SOI?
The Survey of India (SOI) is the national survey and mapping organisation of the country, functioning under the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Established in 1767, it holds the distinction of being the oldest scientific department in India and serves as the principal agency for all geodetic, geophysical, and topographical surveys and mapping activities across the nation. Headquartered in Dehradun, the SOI is responsible for maintaining the national map series, providing geospatial intelligence to defence forces, and supporting infrastructure development projects. Its maps and data are widely used in urban planning, resource management, boundary demarcation, and disaster preparedness. The organisation's data is also referenced by research institutions, government agencies, and private sector companies for land administration and environmental studies. For competitive examinations such as UPSC, SSC, and state public service commissions, questions related to the Survey of India frequently appear in general awareness and geography sections.
