State Health Society
Full Form of SHS
What is SHS?
State Health Society, commonly referred to as SHS, is a state-level autonomous body set up under the National Health Mission framework of the Government of India. Each state and union territory has its own State Health Society that works in close coordination with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to plan, execute, and monitor public health programmes at the grassroots level. The society is responsible for delivering a wide range of healthcare services, particularly in rural and underserved regions, including reproductive and child health, immunisation drives, tuberculosis control, and vector-borne disease management. It also plays a key role in implementing flagship schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Janani Suraksha Yojana, and various state-specific health initiatives. State Health Societies manage the financial flow from central and state budgets and oversee the recruitment of frontline health workers like ASHA workers, ANMs, and staff nurses through regular notifications. Aspirants preparing for UPSC, state public service commissions, and NHM examinations should familiarise themselves with the structure and functioning of State Health Societies as governance-related questions on decentralised health planning frequently appear in competitive exams.
