Health and Wellness Centre
Full Form of HWC
What is HWC?
A Health and Wellness Centre (HWC) is a primary healthcare facility established under India’s Ayushman Bharat scheme, launched in 2018. These centres aim to provide comprehensive primary care, moving beyond maternal and child health to include non-communicable diseases, mental health, dental care, and geriatric services. Each HWC serves a population of approximately 5,000 in rural areas and 15,000 in urban areas, staffed by a community health officer and a team of nurses and support staff. As of 2025, over 1.5 lakh HWCs have been operationalized across India, transforming the public health landscape. They are used daily by patients seeking outpatient care, diagnostics, and health promotion activities. The initiative is critical for achieving Universal Health Coverage and reducing the burden on secondary and tertiary hospitals. For students preparing for competitive exams like UPSC, NEET, or public health courses, understanding HWCs is essential because questions often appear on Ayushman Bharat components, the key differences between Sub-Centres, Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and HWCs, and the role of community health officers in India’s healthcare system.
